Frequently asked questions
The process of measuring lung function capacity — or the ability to inhale or exhale — is known as pulmonary function testing (PFT) or spirometry. These tests serve to help determine overall lung function, which can help diagnose chronic lung diseases, including asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
A Lung Function test(Spirometry) measures the flow of air through your lungs and estimates the amount of air in your lungs. It also tells a healthcare provider how strong your lungs are and how well you breathe.

A diagnostic spirometer is a medical device that is used to measure lung function. It can be a portable or stationary device that is operated by a medical professional who is specially trained in proper testing procedures and techniques to produce a more consistent and reliable result.
There are multiple patient-symptoms or medical conditions that justify the use of spirometry. A few of the most common indicators include:
- To manage asthma and COPD patients
- Evaluate shortness of breath
- Perform surveillance for occupational-related lung disease
- Evaluate former or current smokers over the age of 45 for COPD
- Classification of COPD. (COPD is an umbrella term that covers multiple respiratory diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF))
- Monitor disease progression
- Measure response and progress due to treatment, medication, and respiratory therapy
- Smoking cessation
This noninvasive exam uses sound waves to create detailed images of the heart in motion. It shows how blood moves through the heart and heart valves. An echocardiogram can help determine if a valve is narrowed or leaking.
An ECG is a quick and painless test that records the electrical signals in the heart. It can tell if the heart is beating too fast or too slowly.
A Holter monitor is a portable ECG device that’s worn for a day or more to record the heart’s activity during daily activities. This test can detect irregular heartbeats that aren’t found during a regular ECG exam.
Echocardiography is a test to assess blood flow through the heart. By carrying out this test, a cardiologist can determine how well the heart functions by measuring the periods of pump activity and the amount of blood being pumped.
Echocardiography in children is done either with the child lying down or lying in their parent’s lap. This approach can help comfort them and keep them still. For each of these tests, a trained sonographer performs the test. A cardiologist interprets the results.
An echocardiogram (“echo”) is an ultrasound test that uses sound waves to view the heart. It is safe, painless, and without radiation. Pictures of the child’s heart can be viewed on a small monitor while the procedure is being performed.
The commonest reason to have an echocardiogram, or echo, is to check that your heart is functioning normally. Symptoms that suggest your heart may not be working well include: Breathlessness. Ankle swelling
A cardiac MRI “shows us more than echocardiography or an exercise stress test,” Steiner adds. “Those tests have benefits, but MRI shows more in terms of the heart’s shape, size, volume, function.
